True Role of Chaos in Your Life

As a Stress Management Specialist, I hear a lot of folks who are impacted negatively by the chaos they are facing and the energy they spend trying to navigate through it. A busy life may inherently feel chaotic but the truth about chaos is that is can actually be a good sign for the coming change as you evolve and grow. The key to chaos is to learn how to ride the wave of chaos to conserve energy vs. resisting the chaos, which costs precious energy.

If you have had the experience of surfing, body surfing or boogie boarding at the beach you may remember how it felt to catch a wave into the shore on your board or by body surfing. You know how it feels to “catch the wave” as you glide into shore riding the lip of the curl. You know how it feels to experience floating on top of the water with minimal effort. If you miss the wave, you will be tossed around, thrown off your board and likely end up with a mouth full of sand.

This is the same for the chaos in your life. There is a way to ride the chaos in your life to arrive at a new place with focus and intent. When you resist the chaos you can feel impacted by stress and feel like you are swirling around out of control being pommelled by the chaos. This use of energy can be exhausting.

Any time you are in the process of creating a new pattern, or in a culture of change, you will take the same steps to get there. From the time the new pattern enters your focus until the time that the new pattern is completely integrated you will follow the same process from start to finish as you make a change. This principle can even be applied to making changes to your current lifestyle or habits.

Chaos is an essential step any time you are creating change for yourself.

Somewhere between leaving the old way and settling into the new way, you will meet the chaos of change. So the key is to meet the chaos a part of the change process so you can ride the wave and conserve your energy to reach the other side of change. Alternately, if you resist chaos and push against it you will feel stuck and you will waste a lot of your precious energy.

Chaos is included in the gift of change so you can shake out what is no longer working and integrate the new pattern or habit that you can settle into. Chaos helps us to wake up and be present to life around us so we step out of complacency and pay attention to the task at hand. Chaos invites us to become awake, aware and alert to life around us. Chaos is a gift to assure us that life is always moving, evolving and growing. We want to grow and evolve with life and the changes around us, not box ourselves in by playing it safe and avoiding chaos.

When we avoid chaos, we miss out on the opportunity to grow and change as we evolve into our best, most shining potential. When we resist chaos we waste a lot of energy to finally get to where we want to go. It’s like going to the beach and not getting into the water but standing on the shore and watching the waves come in vs. jumping in and riding the waves into shore. When my clients complain about the chaos they experience as they re-wire their lifestyle, I always affirm to them that chaos is a strong sign for the progress they are making and to keep going to reach the other shore.
