Resistance: Blocks us from flow and may feel like we are living with the handbrake on, which costs a lot of precious life force energy and contributes to exhaustion.  Imagine how it would feel to drive with the breaks on in terms of how your vehicle will perform.

The longer you are in resistance, the more energy you will lose. It can look subtle, such as the ways you avoid engagement through distraction and procrastination, or it can look like kicking and screaming all the way until you finally take the leap out of resistance and jump headfirst into the fire.

When you take one step into action you will step out of resistance and into FLUIDITY and FLOW. Fluidity and flow are more energy conserving and can help you to get unstuck.

Resistance is a key factor behind much of our stress. Often what we are stressing about is linked to what we are resisting. We each do resistance in our own way. Some will wait and wait to take action until it’s the eleventh hour or we’re forced to make a move or the opportunity will pass us by. Some are surprised by the energy they are resisting and don’t even see it coming until the situation is in their face. Others will fight the energy as their way to resist.

Our internal readiness to change, or to meet a challenge, may impact how we engage with our resistance. Making the decision to prioritize one baby step of action is all it takes to get into flow and out of feeling stuck in our resistance.

Moving through resistance can come in stages.

  • In the precontemplation phase, we deny there is a problem to solve. We are blind to it and in full resistance to change because it is not even on our radar when we have no self-awareness of the need to take action.
  • In the contemplation phase we are thinking about making a change, but have still not put an action into place. We may be sitting in ambivalence or considering the pros and cons of taking action. We may stew here for some time until we have our “why” as the priority or decision to engage with action.
  • In the planning phase we are actually ready to think about taking action and formulating a way to break free from our resistance.
  • In the action phase we are taking steps and are in the flow or fluidity of change and out of resistance. We may actually gain energy from the steps we take using our chi/ki to move through our resistance. Our attitude may shift from “I should” to “I can” or “I will.”

Many times when we feel stress we are actually in resistance about something. The longer we resist, the longer we will experience our stress patterns. The longer we are in stress, the more energy we lose.

One of the key methods to gain more energy is to stop losing it! If we can stop procrastinating, distracting, stalling, piddling, or postponing, we can actually stop the energy leak.

Attention = Power is in effect here. Where our focus goes is what grows. If we focus on our distraction, we will get more of that. If we focus on the decision we can make or one step we can take to engage with what we are resisting, we will unblock our energy flow and step out of resistance and into action.

The first step towards decisive action and taking that first baby step is your awareness to simply notice and name your resistance without judgement or concern. “Isn’t that interesting how I’m reading email articles instead of writing my proposal.” Or, “Notice how I’m organizing my closet instead of making that phone call.” You might even have a chuckle when you catch yourself in the act and then you can make a choice to focus on your next step towards that thing you are resisting and stressing about.
