Flu Shots Pros and Cons

This is your public service announcement…..why I think it’s a good idea to get a flu shot every year. The season is upon us and you are better off to get one sooner than waiting until the flu surrounds you on all fronts.

The flu shot takes 2 weeks to fully kick in with your immune response so when folks say that the flu shot made them sick; it means that you were already exposed at the time you received your flu shot.  This can happen especially if you wait until the height of flu season to get your shot.

Flu Shots Pros and Cons

Sometimes you may still come down with some mild flu symptoms during the year but guess what? The operative word here is MILD. You may experience a cold or achiness for a day or two. When you have the fully loaded version of the flu you can be down in bed for one-two weeks……this means not working, unable to earn an income and being too ill to function at all until you get back on your feet. So if you have the karma to be ill this winter, which version do you want, the short quick not really getting you down version or the long drawn out flat on your back in bed version?

Some folks have never gotten a flu shot if they are allergic to eggs. Now there is a version that is made without eggs for these sensitive folks. There is now a specific version for those who are 65 years old and above and a version for those of us under 65.

Once that bug starts hitting the office, the holiday gatherings, the community venues…..you will be exposed very readily as the flu passes from one person to the next….incubating for up to two weeks before the symptoms manifest.

There are many urban legends about flu shots. No there is not a live virus in the formula. Yes there may be medical and religious reasons to not have one. But if you are self employed, or a busy bee……it is in your best interest to protect yourself from a serious bout with the flu this season from October through March.
