Sometimes we LOVE change, which opens the door to readiness to engage with change. More accurately, our readiness makes us love change.
Other times we HATE change, which opens the door to our resistance.
We live in an era where you may be feeling both ends of the spectrum at the same time. Distractions abound; technology and connectivity are lightning fast, and we get pulled into the fast-flowing stream of life from multiple directions all day long.
As a Stress Mastery Coach, I help my clients to rewire their stress response so they can feel more empowered in their leadership. To encode new patterns of resilience to navigate through resistance and sabotaging habits. Neuro-Regulation is a hot topic these days, and at the end of the day, our stress patterns are hard-wired habits that we can change if we have the readiness to find a new way that is more sustainable for our energy, our happiness, and our success at work and at home.
When you are ready to change, you can be successful no matter how busy you are. If you recognize your personal value of why this change matters, and what is at stake if no change happens, you will increase your internal motivation to follow through.
To engage with change, we need to slow down, become more aware, and deliberately choose to focus on the desired change. In terms of our awareness, Attention = Power. Where our focus goes is what grows. Default patterns are our automatic responses that follow a well-worn path. Changing patterns needs a deliberate, mindful approach to forge the new way, like cutting a new trail through the forest.
Neuro-regulation is wired for efficiency through patterns running as the operating system of our Nervous System. We don’t have to learn how to drive a car every time we want to hop in the car to run an errand. Our Smartphones don’t need to be relearned every time there’s an upgrade unless we are changing from Apple to Android. 😊 Furthermore, once we have learned something as an established pattern, our thoughts can think of other things simultaneously as a second attention while we drive or use our smartphones.
Our neurons that fire together are wired together to communicate a repeatable path unless we make a conscious effort to change the direction of the path. A new program or habit requires a focused effort to train a new path in our nervous system, literally growing new axons and dendrites to connect with one another. As we repeat the desired pattern, it’s like watering the garden; the path grows stronger and more defined as “the way.”
Enough about science on this topic. We each have arenas in our life and lifestyle where we desire to make a change. To hardwire a new pattern into a new habit takes 66-90 days. It also takes a solid plan that includes “flexible structure”.
“Flexible Structure: means that you need both enough structure to know when you are doing the new habit and a plan to compensate when barriers get in the way of your plan. Something you can track and measure, so you know you are doing it. Success is also reinforced when you have a backup plan or a contingency option for when barriers get in the way. A Plan B is essential for your internal motivation to stay consistent with the new attitude or behavior. It makes the difference in the internal dialogue that says “yes, I’m still on the horse” vs. “I’ve failed again.”
A Stress Response Reset can turn around stress habits and the bigger consequences of the habits we engage in when we are stressed. A neuro-regulated approach to leadership is possible with a clear plan and a multi-pronged approach. It all starts with a readiness to change and an openness to meet change as an opportunity to grow.
