Change is in the air. We all know change is coming and what creates the most stress is not knowing the scope of what is coming or what effect it will have on us.
Sometimes, we anticipate change, other times we are blindsided by change.
Learning to deal with change takes a mindful approach, especially when we are facing the unknown and change that we can’t control. Mitigating fear and resistance is how to master our stress when confronted by change.
Resistance is triggered by negative expectations and judgment, which are the enemies of change.
The key to staying out of resistance is to not label change with a negative frame but to remain curious in the face of the unknown.
It may sound like this: “Isn’t it interesting where I am going…..” or “Let’s see where this will take me…” Humor can be a strategy to not take ourselves too seriously in the face of change so we can lighten up and gain clarity.
Fear will fuel our resistance as
False
Expectations
Appearing
Real
We want to open our imagination to what is possible and not go into fantasy and illusion about the worst-case scenario. Our human nature is to create safety, so the invitation is to stay in reality about the truth of the situation so we can stay solution-oriented rather than stuck in the problem.
You may ask yourself a Reality Check:
“What do I know?”
“What do I not know?”
“What is the truth of the situation?”
“What is mine to do in this situation?”
The key to stress mastery during times of change is to stay solution-oriented for the elements that are within our control and to recognize what is beyond our control or our scope for engagement.
At the heart of Stress Mastery is our ability to take a pause, draw in a deep breath, and tune into our inner river of wisdom. When we can listen to our gut, and trust intuition, we can stop our mental dialogue from running amuck. Stressful scenarios sabotage our ability to meet the challenge of change with an open mind to see realistically “what is in it for me and what can I do about it?”
A mindful approach to change will support how we can meet the unknown head-on with a solution-oriented mindset and not get stuck in our resistance, expectations, fears, and judgments. We always have control over our attitude and approach during any change when we can take a breath, pause, and reflect on the reality of the situation.
