Gladys McGarey's Living Medicine Vision

I recently had the privilege to meet Dr. Gladys McGarey where she shared her vision for a new paradigm in medicine.  Dr. Gladys is 93 years old and is still engaged in evolving medical practice to the next level for integrative health. She really inspired me the day we visited. She is amazing. Her website is: TheFoundationforLivingMedicine.org

Dr. Gladys has practiced family medicine for over 60 years and she is best known as a pioneer for holistic medicine. She is now working on promoting the “Next Practice” rather than the “Best Practice” that the rest of health care is focused on.

Love allows us to heal. If you create a loving environment from preconception through to death, you are focusing on the entire process of life. She has founded the Foundation for Living Medicine to promote this model. She shared an interesting perspective on “Anti-Aging” and “Anti-Oxidants” and “Antibiotics” that made me see how we should look at health from a different perspective than “killing.”  She calls her vision “Living Medicine” meaning that we are each on our own continuum of health and we need to explore how we can take responsibility to move our health to the next level. There is nothing we can do about the fact we are aging, but how we engage our health is how we embrace life – and living is the way to age with grace.  Dr. Gladys has a theory that love allows us to heal and fear is what blocks us from healing. There is a shift in consciousness happening that people are waking up to see how love can heal. Health Coaching can support the journey for one to explore what brings harmony and happiness for healing and to gain insight about their fears.

As stated by Dr. Gladys McGarey, “when we focus on disease, our energy is directed to what we do not want… the disease, rather than what we want… healing.  In Living Medicine, we may still work with a disease, which could require drugs and surgery, but the emphasis would be on being whole and alive, instead of killing.  The Living Medicine model recognizes the wholeness of life rather than the absence of disease.  It recognizes living as the journey for bringing parts of ourselves back into wholeness.

The Living Medicine model encourages self-responsibility for one’s health.”

Health coaching supports one to find their way into wholeness and optimal health through creation of new patterns for the process of life.
