Barriers to Change. I was walking along one of my favorite trails today and along the trail I came upon a fallen Aspen tree that was lying vertically across the trail. I had to come to a dead stop. Could I go over it? Could I go around it? Would someone come along and cut it up into smaller pieces?
It is the same when we are moving through life. Sometimes a pattern that we always do will suddenly have a big barrier so we have no choice but to find a new way. The old ways just won’t work any longer. We must seek to find a new way. The change in pattern to something more productive will create chaos until we settle into our new way. We may feel uncomfortable until we find our way around the barrier.
The same is true when we make up our mind to actively change a pattern. We may move into the new way and encounter barriers as we try to change. In this way the actions for change must be tweaked until we find a way that will work for us.
The tree in the middle of the trail or the barrier we encounter is a big part of how coaching supports change. The coach will partner with the person being coached to find a way around the barrier to seek the new path that supports change. In this way a new pattern can become hardwired for sustained change once the barriers are encountered and solutions to get back on the track are identified. This can take multiple small steps to find a full solution to a barrier in our path.
