How to Create a "Sticky" Plan for Sustainable Change image

You have goals for 2017 and now you find that your motivation to change is waxing and waning. Life is busy and you are distracted from your goals for this year.

Here is the good news, the most successful change happens when you take small, incremental steps and get those locked in before you add to your plan.

The reason that you have failed to sustain your goals for 2017 is not a reflection that you failed but more that your plan has not been “sticky” enough to stack your deck for success.

Eight Tips to create a Sticky Plan:

  • Values are the fuel for motivation to make a change. What is the personal value you are supporting when you commit to change?
  • Your actions need to be very specific, timed and measurable so you can track your progress.
  • Tracking your progress supports your motivation to keep going
  • Plan for celebration during the process of change to hardwire the new behavior into your nervous system.
  • Start with small increments of time or frequency to build on with confidence for success
  • Add a component of fun, pleasure, creativity or relaxation to your plan to keep your attitude positive and to speed up the integration of the new habit or pattern.
  • If you backslide, get back on the horse and “continue” with your plan, don’t “quit.”
  • Find an accountability partner who will support you when you need a boost and who will also keep you motivated to follow through on your actions
